The creation of new Tasmanian Aboriginal Heritage Legislation will affect many people throughout the Tasmanian community. For the Aboriginal community, this is an opportunity for their unique culture to be recognised and protected by contemporary legislation. For those who use, own or have an interest in the land, it is an opportunity to ensure certainty for their long-term plans, whether it is for private, commercial or recreational purposes.
The project was announced by the Tasmanian Government on 5 June 2005. Consultation and research is continuing as information is being prepared for the draft Bill with the aim to be taken to public consultation in 2009.
